If left untreated, cavities can cause more serious problems to the tooth structure, which is why it is important to have caries treated by your dentist as soon as possible.
Cavities develop when plaque is present on your teeth. Every time you eat or drink, bacteria in the plaque convert sugars and carbohydrates from food into acid. This causes an acid attack that damages the enamel. The result is cavities. With caries, it is not what you eat that matters, but how often you eat during the day. The more often you eat, the more often the enamel comes into contact with harmful acid.
Good oral hygiene goes a long way towards preventing tooth decay. Our tip is to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Use dental floss, toothpicks and interdental brushes. Other tips for preventing cavities:
Limit yourself to a maximum of seven meals and drinks per day. This gives your saliva a chance to protect your teeth.
Visit your dentist every six months for a regular check-up. During these visits, the dentist will carefully examine your teeth. If he finds any cavities (or the beginnings of cavities), we will take immediate action to prevent more serious problems. We can also treat early cavities with fluoride.
Filling cavities is fully covered for children up to the age of eighteen. For adults, the treatment is not covered by basic insurance. Health insurers offer various supplementary insurance policies. The amount covered varies depending on the insurance company. We therefore recommend that you check with your own health insurer to see whether filling cavities is covered.
